Do to schedule concerns we are diving into the archives this week and checking out today when Abraham heard the calling.

When Abraham heard the calling

Abraham Heard the Calling

The Calling of God

God Calling.  I have never heard a thunder-clap of the Divine Voice echoing around me.  The still small voice is often undecipherable amidst the cacophony of noise surrounding us today.  Yet there is a leading, an urging, an every growing restlessness deep down inside, the something you cannot place your finger upon but it is there nonetheless. I wonder when Abraham heard the calling of God what did He think?  I wonder what Abraham heard?

We know from Scripture that Abram, as he was known before God renamed him Abraham, was visited by both angels and with One  many consider to be the pre-Incarnate Christ.  When God said to Abram, ” Get up and leave the land of your people and I will lead you to a new land and make a great nation of you, ” was it an audible command? When Abraham heard the calling did it ring in his ears and echo through his mind?

Abraham Heard Something

Did people think Abram was crazy or did he even share this with others?  I have no proof, the Scriptures simply tell us that ” God Said ” and leaves it at that.  Neither do we know the conversations Abram had with relatives and neighbors after receiving the call, but I can imagine he told them and it  was likely animated.

” What do you mean, Abram, that God is calling you to trust Him and to do a work for Him? ”

” You cannot just up and leave the security of family….your roots are here. ”

” You don’t even KNOW where you are going and which god is speaking to you anyway? “

Abraham Heard the calling and served God

If you serve God in any meaningful way, if you lay it on the line, if you are trusting Him with your life and the lives of your family: just as when Abraham heard the calling, you too may face ridicule and unending questions as to your intent and your sanity.

” Why would God use you?  We KNOW where you have been and what you have done. ”

” You are going to do what??? ”

” You have not heard from God.  You are delusional, an egomaniac, and the thought of God using you is preposterous. “

Or maybe those closest to you, in a well meaning way, are more subtle in their detractions.

” Why can’t you serve God where you are at? ”

” Are you sure it is God and not you? ”

” There are other people HE can use…stay here and be comfortable. “

Going as Abraham did

Are you willing to go, as he did when Abraham heard the calling of God in his life?  Are you willing to pull up stakes, gather your belongings, and head out wherever HE may lead:  not knowing if you will ever see the destination but being faithful to the call?

Not all are called, lead, or beckoned as Abraham was.  Some will stay and work diligently for the Kingdom where they are at because the harvest is ready but the workers are few…everywhere in all places.  I simply urge you to be faithful where God has placed you, doing what HE has called and gifted you to do, and graciously accept the role He has given you as a Member of His Body to perform.

When Abraham heard the calling, the voice, the leading of the Almighty He began a journey that never ended and has blessed countless generations…. Because of his faith in the ONE who called him.

Remember, it is all Him all the time and may your labors be for Him.  Not ever for yourself or vain glory.  Soli Deo Gloria….To God Alone be the Glory forever and ever.  He has appointed some to plant and some to water, but it is God Himself who will give the increase.

Are you willing like when Abraham heard the calling?

God bless and Keep the Faith
